Country hospitality at Boyup Brook Country Music Festival presented by LiveLighter

8 Mar 2018

Boyup Brook came alive on the weekend for the 33rd annual Country Music Festival. Over 10,000 Country music fans from near and far descended on the small town located in the South West of WA, for four days of music, art, camping and good old country hospitality.

Fans were treated to a smorgasbord of world-class music. This year’s line-up was studded with Golden Guitars and awards including the headlining act, US Country Music Association Global Artist of the Year The McClymonts. Other starring artists included Travis Collins, Simply Bushed, Allan Caswell and Country music favourite and first time visitor to Boyup Brook, Luke O'Shea. When asked what was special about the Boyup Brook Country Music Festival he said, “there is the food, hospitality, can do attitude of the locals, the feeling of community, the support and love of country music, the stories behind the songs and the respect for the lyric – it is a songwriters nirvana.”

A large draw card of the Festival is the Lotterywest Street Carnival and Ute and Truck Muster. There is something for everyone as giant horn blowing trucks, flag waving utes, impressive vintage cars and even antique farm vehicles parade down the tree lined main streets of the town. Bridgetown local Cathy Morris brought her grandson and granddaughter to marvel at trucks for the first time this year and exclaimed, "I have never seen anything like it, it is just something you have to experience for yourself, the kids absolutely loved it.” Jess Simpson a proud Boyup Brook local loves that the festival is a family affair, "I love that there is free activities to keep the kids amused whilst the adults can sit back and enjoy listening to the music under the shade of trees.”

Bush Poetry continued to be a major part of the Boyup Brook Country Music Festival, with the Sunday morning Bush Poet’s Breakfast being among the biggest and best in Australia. This year’s Festival featured four programs of bush poetry so there was plenty of opportunity for beginners and seasoned campaigners to have a go. Once again, the Boyup Brook Art Awards and Exhibition organised by the Community Resource Centre and numerous volunteers with the help and support of the Country Music Club ran in conjunction with the festival.

Graham Aird, Boyup Brook Shire President, commended the Country Music Club and the volunteers for another successful event and claims that it really puts Boyup Brook on the map. "The festival offers fantastic fundraising opportunities for local groups and attracts a variety of people to the town. It is great for tourism and the local economy. People attend the festival and then visit again. It is great to see people across all generations coming together.”

The four-day festival included The West Australian Country Music Awards, presented by LiveLighter. Donna Lou and The Jay Katz won Group of the Year. Donna was especially excited about the award and raved about the warm hospitality and welcoming atmosphere of the festival "I love it. It is like coming home once a year. We can't wait to come back next year.”

Boyup Brook really does offer a warm, country welcome to visitors and puts on a fantastic show for young and old and everyone in between in a healthy environment. The festival is organised by the Country Music Club of Boyup Brook and a host of dedicated volunteers. The festival's success is testament to the community spirit and can do attitude of the friendly folks of Boyup Brook. See you there next year!
