Mateship beats at the heart of band playing at this year’s Boyup Brook Country Music Festival

15 Feb 2019

They are three mates who perform as individuals and come together as a trio to play award-winning original songs like Sons of Australia, a tune about growing up in different parts of the country and being united under the Southern Stars as Australians.

They are Bands of Mates, and you can catch them in person at this year’s Boyup Brook Country Music Festival presented by LiveLighter.

Comprising Broome’s Ginger Cox, Victoria’s Evan Platschinda and Terry Bennetts of Kallaroo, the band members offer a unique combination of different vocal and guitar styles that work wonderfully well together.

Bennetts, who grew up on a farm at Kendenup just north of Mount Barker, said the three friends were really looking forward to getting back to the festival where they made their debut as a band.

“We all met for the first time in Tamworth 2006 when myself and my late wife went across for the first time as we were in the Bush Ballad Golden Guitar Awards that year,” Bennetts said.

“We did a bit of playing together around the camp there and build up a mateship over the next few years as we spent a lot of time up in Broome with the three of us as well.

“In 2014 we opened the festival at Boyup on the Wednesday night concert at the hockey oval and we realised that there was something quite unique about the combination of three different guitar and vocal styles that just seemed to work so we decided we needed a name.

“My son came up with the name − as he said, ‘you are all mates and a band so why not Band of Mates’.

“I straight away wrote our theme song, Band of Mates, and we started playing concerts and festival all around Australia and still do to this day.”

Recent accolades achieved for Sons of Australia include Best Group/Duo at the Bush Ballad Gidgee Coals Awards and Best Independent Artists Collaboration at the Brumby awards.

Band of Mates will be performing their Australian bush ballads, traditional country music and instrumentals at the Boyup Brook Country Music Festival presented by LiveLighter, which will take place between February 15 and 17.

The biggest country music event in Western Australia, this year’s music and camping festival will entertain with a long list of top acts headlined by Beccy Cole, and incorporate a street carnival as well as a ute and truck muster, and bush poets breakfast.
